Volunteer involvement brings a wealth of benefits to volunteers, service users and Brent Mind. Brent Mind invest in their volunteers and are rewarded by committed people, without whom many services could not operate.

The great majority of them find volunteering at Brent Mind an excellent experience. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds particularly those who have experience of using mental health services.

Our commitment to volunteers

  • The opportunity to be part of a growing, dynamic and forward thinking organisation.
  • An opportunity to learn new skills and widen their experience.
  • Training and support.
  • A reference about the work undertaken when they move into further education or related employment.
  • Out of pocket expenses.
  • To provide a safe, legal and good practice working environment

What we expect from our volunteers

  • A commitment to volunteering for the time period agreed
  • To uphold Brent Mind's Volunteer Code of Conduct
  • To be sensitive to the aims and philosophy of Brent Mind

A choice of Volunteering Opportunities

Counselling

Brent Mind offers one to one counselling for people living in Brent. The service is currently provided by fifteen volunteer counsellors. Brent Mind works within the Ethical framework of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

As a volunteer counsellor you will receive support, training and supervision. In return you will be expected to see three clients a week over two years.

If you are a qualified counsellor or a counsellor in training who has completed two years training with relevant experience and are enrolled on a Diploma Level Course, we would be pleased to hear from you. In the first instance, you should download our counselling criteria information. If you meet the necessary requirements to become a volunteer counsellor, you can then download an application form.

Mind Map

Mind Map is a peer led mental health promotion project that currently works with secondary school aged young people in Brent.

Volunteers undertake a course delivered by Mind Map staff and other professionals, which will enable them to deliver health promotion workshops in schools and other youth settings in Brent, with the help and support of a Mind Map staff. You must be aged 16 by September of the year you train.

Mind Map can also register you as a Millennium Volunteer, which is recognised by universities, colleges and employers. Volunteering for Mind Map is suitable for young people interested in working with young people.

Social Club

Brent Mind Social Club has opportunities for those who are available to work at least one evening a week or on a Saturday afternoon or evening. We need people who are keen to and would enjoy:

  • Socialising and mixing with people
  • Providing support to our club members
  • Helping in the kitchen to provide food
  • Using their skills to provide alternative therapies such as aromatherapy, etc

We provide training through a short training programme and on the job.

Befriending

Befriending Scheme volunteers support adults who are experiencing mental health problems and are lonely and isolated. Volunteers visit clients at home or meet in the community once a week or a fortnight for one to two hours for a period of one year. They provide a listening ear, companionship, take part in social activities and help them make links with other resources in Brent.

As a volunteer Befriender, you will receive training, supervision and ongoing support.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer befriender, please contact the scheme worker on 0208 451 32 00 or download and print a Volunteer Application Form for Befriending Scheme.

The Rainbow Group

The Rainbow group is a multicultural group for older women who are experiencing emotional distress. We need volunteers who are keen to and would enjoy:

  • Socialising and talking with the clients
  • Taking part and helping with the activities (keep fit, art work, etc)
  • Helping organise outings and entertainment (guest speakers, visits to places of interest such as local theatre or garden centre)

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee meets on a monthly basis. It has the legal and financial responsibility for Brent Mind. The Executive Committee always welcomes new volunteer members, in particular people with skills in Housing or Human Resources as well as Brent Mind service users and tenants. Members of the Executive Committee can be co-opted until the next Annual General Meeting and they would need to stand for election by the members of Brent Mind.

If you are interested in any of the volunteering opportunities, please contact Brent Mind on 0208 451 32 00 for more information.
